The sleet lashed against the high leaded windows of the midnight observatory, sharp and rhythmic, a cold New England nor’easter attempting to batter its way into the bone-white cloisters of Hollow Saints College. Down in the forbidden stacks, at exactly forty-three minutes past two in the morning, Seraphine Vale walked her patrol. She carried a single ward-lantern, its pale blue light guttering over the iron-grated mezzanines and casting long, skeletal shadows across the spines of caged grimoires. The air down here always smelled of ozone, old dust, and the faint, metallic tang of dormant magic. Seraphine paused at the end of aisle four, her knuckles instinctively brushing the brass sigil plates mounted on the endcaps. She never used her fingertips. The phantom sting of a ward-burn from seven years ago still haunted her muscle memory, a permanent reminder of what happened when a scholar trusted the institution over her own instincts. Seraphine stared at the strike-through, her breath catching in her throat. Pinned to the opposing page was a heavy cardstock memo bearing the wax seal of the Board of Saints. The handwriting was elegant, merciless, and immediately recognizable. Maris Ellwood. “The Board finds the current trajectory of the Relic Semiotics and Containment project untenable,” Seraphine read aloud, her voice trembling in the cavernous space. “The grant is hereby revoked, effective at breakfast, unless Professor Keane and Archivist Vale can present a united front and deliver a profitable, fully controlled demonstration of the Codex of Saintsfall before dawn. Failure to comply will result in immediate termination of the project and the reallocation of all associated personnel.” The ledger blurred before her eyes. Revoked at breakfast. The words yanked her violently backward in time. She was twenty-two again, an eager fellow breaking the wax on a veiled satchel because a senior professor told her it was safe. She felt the catastrophic surge of magic, the shattering glass, the stone cracking above her, and the crushing weight of the Board’s subsequent narrative. They…
