Thunder rattled the narrow balcony glass of the After Dark high-rise, vibrating through the soles of my shoes. I stood in the center of the neon-washed couple’s conflict suite, gripping a laminated beat sheet that detailed exactly how tonight’s VIP test shoot was supposed to go. It was one a.m. in downtown Chicago, the rain was coming down in sheets, and my talent was nowhere to be found. The heavy suite door clicked and swung open. Declan Marsh stepped inside, shaking water from his dark hair, his jaw set in a tight line. He wore his usual night-manager uniform—black button-down rolled up to expose heavily tattooed forearms, a silver key ring spinning around his index finger. “The VIPs bailed,” Declan said, dropping a wet master keycard onto the glass coffee table. “And the storm just blew the primary grid. The backup system kicked in, but the building’s in lockdown until dawn. Nobody in, nobody out.” I stared at him, my pulse ticking up a notch. “Elias is expecting the launch metrics by tomorrow morning. If we don’t have the test footage for this suite, he’s going to scrap the entire chemistry initiative.” I tapped my color-coded marker against the laminated sheet. “Marisa at the front desk explicitly cleared the overnight schedule at the front desk so we’d have absolute privacy for this shoot. We need a couple.” Declan stopped pacing and looked at me, his dark eyes catching the flicker of the emergency lights. “Then we do it.” “Do what?” “The shoot,” he said, closing the distance between us until I had to tilt my head back to meet his gaze. “We step in. You and me. We fake-date for the cameras, we hit your little marks, and we save both our jobs.” I took a sharp breath, my hyper-controlled professional distance fracturing. “Absolutely not. I am the choreographer, Declan. I write the scripts. I don’t perform them.” “You’re terrified of being off-script,” Declan murmured, his voice dropping its usual teasing edge. “You’ve been hiding behind your footnotes and your stage directions…
