Chapter 1 of 1

Ash on the Scales

Queen of the Last Spark · Elowen Hart · 13m

The air inside the sealed treasury under the Ashen Palace was thick enough to choke on, heavy with the metallic scent of old gold and the bitter bite of dormant magic. Ines Nash moved down the central aisle, her boots making no sound against the obsidian floor. On either side of her, rows of bone-inlaid coffers stretched into the gloom, each one holding a fraction of the crown’s hoarded wealth. But Ines was not here for the gold. She was here for the ash. Her breath plumed in the frigid air, frosting the edges of her high, dark collar. Through the narrow crystal aperture cut into the ceiling, the bruised, purple-black sky of eclipse-eve midnight pressed down like a held fist. She had perhaps two hours before the shadow swallowed the moon entirely, and the throne-tax ledgers were still tipped wrong — a dangerous, humming imbalance that would trigger automatic forfeit clauses across a dozen border estates the moment the eclipse peaked. Maera Ghent had delivered that particular piece of information with the soft, pleasant smile she reserved for threats she did not need to raise her voice to make. The failure, she had implied, would settle on Ines’s shoulders with the permanence of carved stone. Ines reached the center of the vault, where the massive central ash-balance dominated the space — all wrought iron and suspended basins, perpetually sifting the pale, sentient ash that measured the realm’s obligations. She raised her lantern, intending to check the left pan, but the light caught on something else. Or rather, someone else. Chained to the iron stanchion beside the balance, illuminated by the faint, ambient glow of the ash, stood Bastian Quill. Ines froze, her heart seizing so violently she thought her ribs might crack. The lantern trembled in her hand, casting wild shadows across his face. He was supposed to be dead. The reports from the border mistlands had been definitive. Yet here he was, flesh and blood, leaning against the cold stone as if he had been waiting for her. He looked rougher than the portraits she had studied in the archives — his jaw shadowed with scruff, his dark hair falling over eyes that held a sharp, dangerous intelligence. A fraying strip of mistland cloth was wrapped around his wrist, just below the heavy iron manacle that bound him to the vault. “You,” Ines breathed, the word scraping out of her throat. Bastian tilted his head, a sardonic, humorless smile touching his lips. “Ines Nash. The crown’s incorruptible accountant. I’d bow, but the Ashen Court’s hospitality leaves something to be desired.” “You’re dead,” she said, her voice dropping to a whisper. Her fingers tapped a rapid, anxious rhythm against the brass…
