Embers of the Ashen Court · Book 5
by Elowen Hart
In the Glass Court’s lower gallery, ash-reader Zephyrine Cael opens their authentication ledger and finds a fire-blossom petal pressed between its pages — still warm, placed by no hand they can name. They are there to examine a contested blood-magic seal, to render the careful, procedural verdict that has kept them alive and employed for a decade. They are not there to feel anything.
Then Soren Valdrath walks in. Cold, precise, and carrying a name Zephyrine has spent ten years refusing to think about — the younger sibling of the lord whose pyre Zephyrine’s cowardice lit.
The seal is forged. Zephyrine can read it in the layered ash-work, in the burn-pattern that post-dates the document’s own claimed origin. Reporting it honestly will name a faction powerful enough to end careers, shutter exile houses, and arrange quieter endings than a formal pyre. The ember clergy have already delivered their guidance. The faction has already made clear what a safe reading looks like.
