Every bite at the Nightshade Club requires permission. Kestrel Vale has built her career on those words — drafting consent oaths in a glass booth beneath a chandelier of antique fangs, keeping the court honest, keeping herself safe. She knows better than to trust a vampire with her language. She knows better than to trust herself after the Mardi Gras night that nearly broke her.
Before dawn, the court summons her to the penthouse crypt with a name already printed on the docket: Jasper Morrow. Delinquent. Dangerous. A century-old blood-oath unpaid and a debt the Nightshade court intends to collect in public, in spectacle, in chains — unless a human consent-notary drafts a protection bond and seals it before the first gray light clears the shutters. Unless that human is Kestrel.
Jasper is everything she distrusts: bruised knuckles, predator stillness, secrets he won’t name. He is also, infuriatingly, the only one in the room who wants the same thing she does — a covenant that cannot be twisted into a cage. Forced into a curtained velvet booth with minutes dissolving and rival factions circling, they argue clause by clause, knee to knee, over what a promise is worth when the institution behind it cannot be trusted.
