Dusk bled like an open wound across the ash plains, stripping the last pale light from the sky as Soleil Brier slipped between the heavy canvas flaps of the Veiled Market. The air inside the dusk-only contract stall tasted of ozone and burnt sugar. Lanterns flared to life along the central ridgepole, their golden glow illuminating the cramped space, the shelves of ash-dusted scrolls, and the low wooden contract table dominating the floor. She was not alone. Lucian Ives stood on the far side of the table. The crown’s shadowbound prince wore a dark coat dusted with the pale gray of the plains, his scarred face half-hidden in the gloom. The shadows in the corners of the stall seemed to lean toward him, shivering like expectant hounds. He did not look surprised to see her. “You came,” Lucian said, his voice a low, rough scrape against the silence. “It is my mother’s workroom,” Soleil said, her mapmaker’s eyes already measuring the space between them, noting the choked exit behind him and the lack of windows. “My inheritance. I didn’t expect the king’s shadow to be waiting for a deed.” “It isn’t just your inheritance, Soleil.” From the deepest shadow at the back of the stall stepped Maris Corven. Maris moved with the eerie, implacable serenity of a priestess about to draw a blade. Her veil fluttered as she stepped into the lantern light, her hands resting on a heavy, iron-bound parchment laid out on the low table. “Sister,” Soleil said, the word bitter on her tongue. “I came to sign the claim. Eira told me the sky-temple house was ready to be transferred.” It still twisted her chest to think of Eira, her ally who had navigated the Market’s shifting allegiances, warning her that this night would be dangerous.
