by Maren Quinn
Vera Kowalski has spent two years making herself invisible inside Northwood Civic Arena — cataloguing every flaw in veteran forward Cole Decker’s game from the film booth above the dark ice, keeping her findings to herself, and telling herself that silence is the same as safety. When she clips her hand-annotated shot-chart to his stall one November morning, unsigned, she expects the data to speak for itself. She does not expect Cole Decker to come looking for her.
He is loud where she is precise, defensive where she is certain, furious at being studied by someone who refuses to apologize for being right. What begins as open warfare in the film room — him demanding explanations, her delivering them without softening — becomes something neither of them knows how to name when the arena empties and the refrigeration hums and there are no witnesses left to perform for.
But Vera is keeping a secret that has nothing to do with data. Cole’s name is on a trade list. She has known for weeks. And the longer she stays silent to protect herself from being ignored again, the closer she comes to becoming exactly the woman she swore she would never be a second time.
