Hundreds of millions of kilometers from Earth, Aurora Station breathes through a lattice of pipes and heat-exchange mesh—and that lattice is dying. Head botanist Blair Whitaker has watched the signs for weeks: frost blooming backward along warm pipes, dripping into the cracked memorial tray they labeled with a dead partner’s name. When command promises a fix, Blair does not expect the fix to have a famous face.
Robin Quill was once the darling of interstellar thermal engineering—charming, celebrated, and dangerously persuasive. Then their smiling endorsement put six miners into body bags. Now Robin arrives on Aurora under a quiet contract and a mountain of guilt, hoping to disappear into the work. Instead, they are ordered into Blair’s observation greenhouse: the one sanctuary on the station, the one person who has every reason to despise them.
There is nowhere to go. The vacuum makes certain of that. Between the amber grow-lights and the sweating pipes, their clashes are fierce and precise—Blair’s cold fury against Robin’s brittle charm, resentment sharpening into something neither of them wants to name. But when the lattice pushes toward catastrophic failure and they crawl together through overheated maintenance shafts to save two hundred lives, the walls between grief and desire begin to conduct heat in ways no engineering diagram can predict.
