by Noel Everett
Maeve has managed the Peach & Pine county fairgrounds through every crisis the Georgia calendar can throw at her — summer floods, ornery livestock, a town council that runs on sweet tea and strong opinions. Closing down the arena on the eve of the fall festival and rodeo is supposed to be a solo job, a quiet final check before the midway lights up and the crowds roll in. Then the October sky splits open, the dirt roads wash out, and the man she has spent a decade not thinking about walks through the office door.
Luke. Former rodeo hand. New consultant for the Pine Ridge orchard backers. And, as of tonight, the required co-signer on the most important venue and livestock contract Peach & Pine has ever seen.
With the storm hammering the metal roof and the town council calling every twenty minutes, Maeve and Luke spread the thick manila folder between them under the warm halo of a battery lantern and agree on exactly one thing: they will get through the night professionally, sign the papers, and pretend that ten years of silence isn’t pooling in every corner of the room. But clause by clause, breach by breach, the contract keeps dragging the past into the light — the night he asked her to leave, the accident she never knew about, the words neither of them was brave enough to say.
