The proxy form sits on the flour-dusted counter of the Main Street bakery, half-hidden beneath a tray of unbaked peach hand pies, and county clerk Xanthe Vale knows that her signature on that single cream-colored page will decide whether Peach & Pine, Georgia keeps its mill, its orchards, and the livelihoods woven into both. She has spent years learning to be careful, invisible, procedural — ever since the town watched her rush through a courthouse marriage and quietly undo it with a pen stroke that still follows her down every gossip-warm street.
Then the delivery bell falls silent and Killian Ellery walks in from the fog.
Sunburned and quietly worn, her long-absent first love has ridden back into town not for her — or so he tells himself — but for the seasonal workers and orchard families who will lose everything when the noon vote comes down. He and Xanthe have not spoken since the morning she honored his panicked hospital-bed request and signed their marriage away. Now they have one charged, flour-dusted morning, a legal pad, two cups of cooling coffee, and a last-minute co-op proposal that could change everything — if they dare stand up together and say so out loud.
