Vesper Quill came back to Peach & Pine, Georgia for exactly three days — long enough to sign the papers on her grandmother’s estate and disappear before the orchard smell could undo her. She did not plan on Alaric Keane.
The will changes everything. Her grandmother has left the crumbling orchard house and the shuttered Main Street bakery to them both, with an ironclad clause: after one summer of shared stewardship, only one heir keeps it all. Suddenly Vesper is elbow-deep in flour and old feelings, working alongside the steady, quiet cowboy she walked out on without a real explanation — and the lie she told herself would protect him is starting to smell like the coward’s way out.
Alaric remembers every detail of the morning she left. He has spent years learning not to reach for things that run, and he is not about to stop being careful now. But the woman scrubbing down his grandmother’s ovens at dawn is not who the town’s gossip circle remembers, and the closer they work, the harder it gets to pretend that what cracked between them was ever truly finished.
