by Lyra Thorne
Sable has spent a year holding Moonveil’s eastern ridge alone — driving iron stakes into frozen ground before dawn, mapping encroachment lines no one else will walk, making themselves useful enough that no one asks where they disappeared to three years ago. It is a quiet kind of penance. It works, until the morning Alpha Rowan Calloway steps out of the tree line and the scent-bond Sable severed ignites in the cold air between them like it never got the message.
The Clearwater coastal pack is pushing into Moonveil territory, and the markers they are leaving are not random. Each stake carries a chemical signature that mimics Sable’s omega-marker — the secret that cost them the bond, their place in the pack, and three years of their own life — weaponized now into a legal claim that could strip Moonveil of the eastern ridge entirely. Sable cannot fight it without speaking the truth. They cannot speak the truth without dismantling the only reason they had for walking away from Rowan in the first place.
Trapped together on the frozen ridge, working the boundary line in temperatures that make professional distance a physical impossibility, Sable gives ground in small, costly increments while Rowan waits with the patience of someone who has already decided they deserve an answer.
