Three hours before the Veiled Market folds into shadow, Soraya Vellantis holds a vial she cannot name and cannot sell — its stolen syllable humming against the hollow where her own true name used to live. She has built a careful life in the ash-dark between the Cinderward citadel’s reach and the rebels’ desperate hunger, trading in other people’s lost selves because her own is already gone. She does not need saving. She needs the census-takers to stop circling her stall before they find what the crown already knows.
Then Calder Ashvane steps out of the smoke behind her — not in front of it, not as a customer — and speaks a binding market-bargain in the old tongue. He already knows what was taken from her. He names it plainly, gives her a real way out, and watches her refuse it anyway. That refusal will cost them both everything the Veiled Market cannot protect.
The bargain is simple: her name-network for his protection, three hours to expose every crown informant buried inside the shadowbound rebels before the market collapses and swallows the evidence whole. What is not simple is the vial still warm in her coat pocket, or the way Calder looks at her like her missing name is not a wound he can use — only one he recognizes.
